From 1989-2000 he lived as an immigrant in New Zealand where he did his BA in English Literature and MA in Indonesian Literature. He was also involved in the underground poetry scene in New Zealand. He was awarded the Original Composition Prize from Victoria University of Wellington and the Blues Award from the University of Auckland for his poetry in English. He now lives in Yogyakarta, Java, as a full-time writer. He has contributed to journals all over Indonesia. He is the author of three books of poetry and a collection of literary essays. His poems in Bahasa Indonesia have been translated into many languages. He is a pioneer of Internet Literature in his country, and works as an editor of the underground literary journal Boemipoetra. From 2005-2007 he was the literature curator of the Yogyakarta Arts Festival as well as a curator of the What Is Poetry? International Festival Indonesia in 2012. In the same year he was invited to launch a book of his poems translated into French at the Unesco House, Paris, France.
